Preface
I wrote this book for me.
It takes courage to write a book. Revealing your art exposes what most of us try to hide. But, quitting a steady desk job and becoming an Uber driver also takes courage. That’s what this book is about. It's a collection of essays and stories about life transitions. It's about my journey from the corporate world to writing, all seen through the eyes of an Uber driver.
I have always been in motion, alway evolving. First, I dreamed of becoming a professional golfer, but I wasn’t perfect. Then, I joined the military with aspirations of becoming a general, but the Air Force had other plans. Later, I tried my hand at entrepreneurship, hoping to make it rich, but that didn’t quite pan out.
As I approached middle age, when COVID-19 hit, I decided to embrace my creative side. I wanted to become a writer and an artist. I am part of the Great Resignation. I'm part of that wave of people who reevaluated their lives and chose a different path. That is where I am today. This book is my journey through the shifts, detours, and realizations that brought me here.
But this book is not only about me; it is also about the countless people I have met along the way. Uber driving gave me a front-row seat to human connection. Every ride was a blind date: two strangers meeting, sharing stories, and parting ways. Some of those conversations stuck with me. They've shaping my perspective on life, work, and purpose. I have collected these moments of fleeting intimacy stories to create something meaningful.
I am a Christian, a husband, a father, and a grandfather. I am a New Yorker living in a small village. I'm an artist, a writer, a video producer, a consultant, an accountant, a businessman, and a golfer. I'm an Uber driver. This book encapsulates all those aspects of my life. This book is about making significant changes. It's about having the courage to start over. It's about embracing who we are, even if you figure it out later than expected.
Life is short, but we always have the option to evolve. This book is a testament to the idea that changing course is never too late. Each of us has the potential to transform into the roles we will play.
Whether contemplating a significant career shift, chasing a creative passion, or simply seeking more fulfillment, know that transformation is always possible. You can become the person God intended you to be.
I am cheering for you.
